The current dynamics on the global steel and alloy markets, coupled with rising material costs, require a strategic focus on efficiency-increasing measures in sheet metal processing. In order to exploit the full savings potential, in-depth knowledge of the materials used and their properties, as well as systematic and data-driven optimization of the manufacturing processes, are essential.

The integration of modern digital technologies as part of Industry 4.0, for example through the use of real-time data for process monitoring and optimization, opens up new opportunities for minimizing downtime and material waste. It also supports transparent cost accounting, improved production planning and method planning, which are essential for efficient production.

A comprehensive approach to material efficiency should also consider greater use of renewable and/or recyclable materials to promote sustainability of production processes. Minimal lubrication, targeted material selection, advanced knowledge of material properties and precise strength calculations also contribute to achieving this goal.

Extending the service life of tools through adapted tool geometries, lower-wear tool materials and improved cooling lubricants, together with systematic error analysis to avoid rejects , is also a key aspect for increasing material efficiency.

Last but not least, it is important that all areas of the company feel committed to this efficiency strategy. This also includes ongoing education and training for staff to ensure that the latest techniques and methods to increase efficiency are consistently applied. The support of external consultants and the use of government funding programs can be particularly helpful in the start-up phase.

Ultimately, the pursuit of material efficiency should always take into account a balance between economic, ecological and social aspects in order to ensure future-proof and sustainable production.
