The plastic support number npl > 1 enables the utilization of load-bearing reserves that a component has after exceeding the elastic limit load (onset of yielding at the critical point) up to the fully plastic load-bearing capacity.
A prerequisite for npl is a non-uniform stress distribution. npl is limited by reaching the fully plastic load capacity or the locally tolerable elongation.
For constant stress in the cross-section, npl = 1.
For ductile materials with a low fracture elongation A < 6%, npl = 1.
